WYBL Summer of Success - Wednesday, August 25, 2010

The dog days of summer met their match this year when boys from the Williamsburg Youth Baseball League took to the field.  Over 100 players ranging in age from 8 to 15 represented the city of Williamsburg and WYBL in tournaments across the state and the region.  Their exploits on the field and in the community represented the most successful year in the 40 year history of the league.

WYBL fielded 9 all star teams in the 2010 summer season, and their success is unparalleled.  7 teams won district titles, besting squads from surrounding leagues in Newport News, Hampton, West Point, Gloucester and other nearby locales.  Their victories allowed these teams to carry the name of Williamsburg to state tournaments in areas such as Big Stone Gap, Bealeton, Victoria, and Purcellville as well as more well known areas like Winchester, Glen Allen and Herndon.

The league’s success in district tournaments carried over to the state competition.  The 8 year old squad earned a 3rd place finish and took the Sportsmanship Award in Fauquier.  The 10s earned a 3rd place finish in their tournament in Glen Allen, while the 13s, who won the prestigious Boys Invitational Baseball tournament in 2009, also finished 3rd in the 2010 state tournament in Victoria.  The efforts of the 8s, 10s, and 13s helped make WYBL the top ranking organization in the state across all age groups.  The 9 year old squad contributed to the league’s ranking. Led by A. J. Klinck, Spencer Pietruzinski, and Ryan Pastirik, the 9s used a strong state tournament to earn an at-large bid to the Southeast Regional tournament.  There they played teams from North Carolina and Florida as well as Virginia, earning valuable experience against top competition.

WYBL’s Majors division, comprised of the best 11 and 12 year olds in the area, took 3 state titles by winning the 11-60, 11-70, and 12-70 tournament trails.  It was the first state title for the 11-60 team, who were led by pitcher JJ Burns as well as John Keane and Evan and Mason Wang.  The team traveled to McKenzie, TN and earned a 4th place finish in the Southeast Region, downing teams from Florida and Tennessee before falling to the eventual region runner-up from Alabama.

The 11-70 group earned their 2nd straight state title behind the efforts of state tournament MVP Luc Lipcius, who tossed a no hitter and led the tournament in hitting, and the solid play of Chris Lansford and Preston Goodbar.  They traveled to Alabama where they eventually fell to the regional champion from Florida.  Upon their return to Williamsburg, the team entered the Boys Invitational Baseball tournament at Shepard Stadium in Colonial Heights, a tournament previously won by the current 13 year old group.  Playing against older teams, the squad finished 3rd, the highest ranking attained by a team without 12 year old players.

The 12-70 group made history by traveling to southwest VA and taking home their 3rd consecutive state title.  Christopher Jones was the tournament MVP and pitchers Kent Klyman and Luke Bruce each tossed gems.  The squad carried the Williamsburg name to Florida where they finished second, falling to the eventual United States champion from Ocala.  Jones and Bruce each won game MVP awards during the regional match-ups.  It is the second year in a row that this team has finished as one of the top 12 teams in the country, having earned WYBL’s first ever Southeast Regional Championship as an 11-60 squad in 2009.

WYBL offers a fall developmental league to help players learn the game and improve their skills.  Games, which begin in early September, are played at the Warhill Sports Complex and at Mid County Park.

12's Three-peat - Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Three-peat: Williamsburg 12s capture third consecutive State Title Christopher Jones takes home MVP honors

Good teams are made up of multiple players who work well together. For the third year in a row, the Williamsburg Wolfpack earned the title of Cal Ripken State Champion because of a total team effort. The squad defeated All Star teams from Peachtree, Winchester, and Glen Allen to earn the title. Christopher Jones had 6 hits, including 2 HRs and a double, to earn recognition as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

In the first game of the tournament, a 10-0 victory over the Peachtree team, Jones hit a 2-run homerun in the first inning to give the local boys the early lead. After Cole Jones added an RBI sacrifice fly, Braden Ricks broken open the game with a 2-RBI single. Christopher Jones belted his second 2-run homerun and Luke Bruce added an RBI single in the 4th inning to put the game away. The squad also got a double from 2-time state tournament MVP Reeves Trott and hits from Austin Cohn and Evan Lowery. Sean Hughes walked three times, scoring twice, and Roger Romero also scored. The team got a strong pitching performance from the trio of Cole Jones, Ryan Mason, and Bruce, who combined to yield only 3 hits in shutting out the opposition. A dazzling double play involving Trott, Noah Scruggs, and Kent Klyman provided defensive highlights.

Game 2 was a 4-3 victory over a tough Winchester team. The squad battled back from 2 deficits to earn the win in extra innings. After being held hitless through 3 innings, Hughes picked up the team’s first hit and only RBI with a line-drive single to deep leftfield to drive in Romero, knotting the game at 1 in the 4th inning. The squad needed a run to send the game into extra innings and got in when Romero scored his second run of the game in the bottom of the 6th. Braden Ricks started the game-winning rally with a single in the 7th, advanced to third on a hit by Trott, and scored the game winning run on a passed ball with 2 outs. The team needed strong defense and pitching to win the game. Evan Lowery, Romero, and Cole Jones combined for a crucial double play to end an inning in which Winchester had the bases loaded with nobody out. They also got a good performance from starter Kent Klyman, who struck out 5 in 6 innings of work, yielding 2 earned runs. Trott earned the victory in relief with 1 inning of no-hit baseball.

Game 3 pitted the local boys against a strong Glen Allen team, with the Wolfpack taking a thrilling 7-3 victory that ended with a triple play. With the bases loaded and no outs, Trott struck out a hitter and ran down two different runners on the bases to end the game. It was a heady play by the pitcher and preserved what had been a strong performance by the squad. Luke Bruce pitched 5 strong innings, giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits and striking out 5. Ryan Mason and Trott combined to slam the door in the 6th inning. Offensively, Sean Hughes drove in the first run of the game with a bases loaded single and Austin Cohn had a 2 RBI double to give the team a lead it would never relinquish. Romero added an RBI single, Scruggs scored, and Ricks and Lowery both picked up key hits. In addition to the triple play, the team got back to back stellar defensive plays from Romero and Hughes in the 5th, with both bare-handing balls and throwing out runners on the move.

The championship game was a rematch with Glen Allen. Klyman was again dazzling on the mound, striking out 5 and surrendering 4 hits and 1 run in the 9-1 victory. Christopher Jones had 3 hits, including a double, to lead the offense. Austin Cohn hit a monster HR deep into CF to tie the game at 1 in the 2nd inning. After Klyman and Cole Jones picked up back to back hits, Evan Lowery and Braden Ricks had RBI singles and Trott added an RBI sacrifice fly to break open the game. Hughes and Bruce added RBI singles and Romero capped the scoring with a single to drive in two runs in the 5th. Jones crowned his MVP performance by throwing out a runner at 3b with a great tag by Hughes. The team turned in a double play for the 4th straight game and Cole Jones made a lunging snare of a line drive to highlight the defense.

The team travels to Ocala, FL to play in the Southeast Regional Tournament July 29-August 4.

12's - 70' team wins District - Saturday, July 03, 2010

Williamsburg 12s win District Crown with         10 HR outburst

Inspired by injured clean-up hitter Luke Bruce, the Williamsburg 12s bashed their way to a 4th straight District championship by getting 10 HRs from six different players in taking 2 games against the visiting Varina squad.  Christopher Jones led the way with 3 HRs and Braden Ricks and Reeves Trott added 2 each.  Williamsburg exploded for 28 runs in 14-0 and 14-4 victories that included a no-hitter.

In game 1, Evan Lowery picked up the team’s 1st hit and scored the initial run to break open a scoreless game in the 3rd.  Ricks followed with the 1st of his 2 HRs before Sean Hughes added an RBI double and Austin Cohn followed with a 2-run homer.  Kent Klyman’s RBI double gave the club an insurmountable 5-0 lead.  After Lowery and Ricks picked up their 2nd hits of the game, Trott added an RBI before Jones hit his first HR of the weekend, a 3 run blast.  The offense continued to roll when Cole Jones and Noah Scruggs added hits before Ricks picked up his 5th RBI with a 3-run homer.  Roger Romero closed out the scoring with a 2-run homer.  The box score for game 1 showed Ricks at 3-3, 2 HRs, 5 RBIs; Christopher Jones 2-3, HR, 3 RBIs; Cohn 2-4, HR, 2 RBIs; Romero 1-4, HR, 2 RBIs and Klyman, Hughes and Trott had a hit and an RBI each.  Lowery had 2 hits, with Cole Jones and Noah Scruggs adding 1 each.

The 2nd contest started in a similar fashion as Trott led off the game with the first of his 2 HRs.  Christopher Jones hit his 2nd HR of the weekend in the 2nd inning.  The team went homerless in the 3rd but got a 2-RBI single by Ricks.  Williamsburg picked up 2 HRs in the 4th inning when Jones had a solo shot and Hughes hit a 2-run homer.  Trott led off the final inning with solo HR before Hughes added an RBI single and Cole Jones finished the game with an RBI single.  In the game 2 box score, Trott 3-4, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs; Christopher Jones 2-3, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs;  Hughes 3-4, HR, 3 RBIs; Ricks 1-3, 2 RBIs; Cole Jones, 1-3, RBI; Cohn 4-4; and Romero added 2 hits.

Manager Phil Jones’ pitching staff was thin due to the absence of hurler Ryan Mason, but game 1 winner Kent Klyman and reliever Sean Hughes quelled Jones’ fears by combining for a no-hitter to open the series.  Klyman struck out 8 hitters in 3 innings while Hughes added 3 strikeouts in 2 innings of work.  The pair’s 11 strikeouts included only 3 walks in a dominating performance that saw only 4 outs recorded by the defense.  Game 2 winner Noah Scruggs pitched effectively by scattering 5 hits and yielding 3 runs in 3 innings of work.  Trott relieved by striking out 2 and giving up 1 run.  Cole Jones closed out the game by seeing only 3 hitters, striking out the last man he faced.

The team will play for the state championship in Big Stone Gap, VA July 15-19.
